There are many NGO's who do good work but do not seek any publicity. Most of these are not mentioned in any of the recent travel books, simply because many of these NGO's do not desire to draw unwanted Taliban/Al-Quada attention to them in this high-risk environment. Having worked in the country for a decade, I can say that many NGO's are NOT paying out high salaries, and are training Afghans to higher levels of expertise. The problem is that all the money-sucking NGO's, the high profile ones, get all the negative media and government attention. I'm amused by all the self-proclaimed "experts" on Afghanistan who've only spent one month in Af, who cannot even get the Dari right and who think they are the first ever to begin certain CDP projects when others have been working quietly here for 30+ years.
